The Need To Detoxify The Body

I used to be quite amazed at the indifference of the medical profession back in the 1980's; indifference, that is, to the likely affects of endless streams of different chemicals being fed, breathed into, drunk and absorbed by the human body in a modern country like England. Our bodies were being bombarded by hundreds, maybe thousands, of different chemicals; we were becoming toxin reservoirs. I was wondering then, how can our bodies cope? How can we detoxify our bodies on a regular basis sufficiently well to help our immune systems keep us in reasonably good health?

That indifference was shared by governments, and companies who profited from the use and distribution of these chemicals. If anyone ever queried the safety of a particular chemical, the response would be taken from the library of stock answers. That chemical had been tested, and not shown to have any side effects in small quantities. Of course, we did not know how thorough those tests were, and whether any results had been massaged in any way. The particular chemical questioned was not a toxin in small quantities, and we only ever consumed it in small quantities.

That indifference was also shared by the water companies. My whole view of chemical pollutants, and the scale of the problem we were dealing with, was changed when I requested a test of my water supply. We had always been told our drinking water was safe, and although I was interested in health matters at the time, I had always just accepted that. It was, after all, in foreign countries you had to be careful about drinking water.

When I received the test results from the water company, I was in for a shock. I was expecting our water to consist of water, H2O. The reason I had asked for the test was to check for dangerous bacteria, as I had noticed a high incidence of stomach sickness along our road, and it had become repetitive. My own family was not prone to stomach sickness and vomiting, yet we had all been hit. fortunately for us, we were affected just the once, but with others we knew of, it had been repeated; the vomitting stopped, and then returned. My request for the test of the water was a precaution.

The test results came back, in the form of a computer print out. It was the old large size computer print out paper; this was the 1980's remember. If you have never seen, such computer paper, then I can assure you, it is big. The results, you would have expected, should have occupied a tiny corner of one sheet of this paper. But no, it not only filled the first page but went well into the second.

What was in the report? It was a long list of chemicals that had been found in the water, the water we not only used for laundry, bathing and washing dishes, but the water we had been drinking for years. I scanned through the list. Many of the chemicals I had not even heard of, but there were quite a few I had. I recognised them as pesticides and fertilizers that were used not just by farmers but by gardeners, and regarded as dangerous if consumed. Of course, that danger level was if you drank a lot of the pesticide; that was the assumption anyway.

The water company included a brief covering letter, saying that all the chemicals in the water were at safe levels. Fortunately, I am blessed with something that governments and such companies lack, and that is common sense. While each individual chemical may have been put through some sort of flimsy test, they had absolutely no way of knowing either what the cumulative affects would be through long term consumption in water, and what the combination with other chemicals would cause to the human body.

Common sense could also be applied further, and did not require any scientific tests. The human immune system had evolved at a snail pace over tens of thousands of years until, suddenly, in the 20th century it was being pummelled from all angles by toxins it was not designed to cope with, and had not had a chance to evolve to cope with. It the same time, nutrients were being stripped out of food by processing, and the immune systems of millions of people were weak at a time they needed to be super strong. You do not need to be a scientist to observe that, and make your own conclusions.

The day I received that report 20 years ago was the last time I drank tap water in England without filtering out the chemicals. For the past 5 years I have been living in the Philippines, and being tropical with the possibility of water borne disease, it is wise to drink purified water only. So, in all that time I have been spared the bombardment of chemicals from the water supply, but not from the air we breathe and some of the food we eat, and some of the things we put on our skins. No doubt, I still accumulate toxins, and would still benefit from detoxifying.

Through ingestion of foreign, toxic substances from the way we live, toxins accumulate in our bodies over the years, slowing us down and stressing our internal systems. These are some of the sources of toxins we come into contact with everyday.

The use of growth hormones in animals

Myriads of chemicals and additives in the foods we eat

Toxins in our drinking water supply eg alumimium is used to take the cloudiness out of drinking water, and copper pipes are used to transport water.

Chemicals in skin creams, suntan lotions, cosmetics, anti-perspirants, etc are absorbed into our bodies through the skin.

Metals from body piercing

Metals from teeth fillings- amalgam contains mercury

Aerating agents in food, and antacids both contain aluminium

Cooking ware – stainless steel, aluminium, teflon

Using alumimium foil to cook food

Widespread use of pesticides

Smoking cigarettes

Adrenalines present in animals slaughtered in abbattoirs

Prescription drugs such as antibiotics

Over the counter drugs

Chemical fertilizers and anti-fungal agents

Chemical and oil spills, pollution in our groundwater

We also create our own toxins when putrefied food that is unable to be fully digested, accumulates in the digestive tract.

And the list goes on.

Toxins are stored in our bodies, in ever increasing amounts, because if we do not have a healthy diet and live a healthy lifestyle, our bodies do not have the capability to eliminate them naturally. They continue to accumulate, and what we take as a sign of getting older and slowing down is actually our toxin levels growing so we feel more and more lethargic.

So while avoiding processed foods, drinking only pure water and buying organic produce, for example, can help reduce the level of toxins we ingest, we cannot avoid them altogether. The entire food chain is building up toxins.

There also exists an amount of toxins in our bodies already accumulated over the years, slowing us down and contributing to our ailments.
