Are You Considering A Detox Diet?
The idea of a detox diet has been appearing in the health and diet press for the last couple of decades. I have no means of measuring, but its coverage has probably increased steadily during that time, as more people have become aware of the toxins they eat, drink and breathe in on a daily basis. Those toxins can then build up in the body so, on the face of it, it seems a reasonable aim to clear out those toxins once in a while.
That is when some people may consider some method of detoxification. To many, that means fasting, or almost fasting on a fruit or fruit juice only diet, for 3 days to a week, even two weeks in some cases; different people have different ideas of what a detox diet really is.
One thing you need to immediately bear in mind is that such a strict near fast diet is very limited in nutrients, and should only sensibly be untertaken with medical supervision, or at least initial advice. It is not an undertaking to be considered lightly. The detoxification process will keep your liver very busy, as all the toxins flushed into the bloodstream will need to be processed their.
The need to have a healthy liver is therefore obvious, so in advance of your detox diet it is worth paying attention to the health of your liver, consuming foods and supplements that aid that health in this crucial organ.
Going on to a full blown, short sharp detoxification diet may not be either necessary or desirable. A longer term diet that aids the liver, and assists the passing of toxins through the digestive system, such as high fibre foods, should bring a steadier removal of toxins without the sudden surge of the semi-fasting diet. Regular bowel movements can be aided by food supplements such as psyllium husks, a soft fibre that does a good job of clearing out the nooks and crannies of the digestive system.
You may also like to consider consulting a fully qualified and medically qualified homeopathic doctor. I found that after taking my constitutional for the first time, in my case sepia, it had an amazing side effect of clearing out my body. The remedy was not taken for the purpose of detoxification, but certainly had that effect. My homeopath did not tell me what to expect, just warned me to take it last thing at night, and that I would see why in the morning. Please note, though, that homeopathic treatments are individual. You will only get the right remedy from an experienced and well qualified homeopathic doctor.
Should you decide on the short, sharp detox diet, you would be well advised to read up as much as possible from the various health sources online, and get some advice from your medical practitioner before setting out on the fast.
