The Formula Used By a BMR Calculator
The BMR formula is different for men and women, but both are simple calculations, and are for adults only:
Women's BMR Formula
655 +
(weight in pounds x 4.3) +
(height in inches x 4.7 ) -
(age in years x 4.7)
Men's BMR Formula
66 +
(weight in pounds x 6.3) +
(height in inches x 12.9) -
(age in years x 6.8)
Step 2 of the BMR/Calorie Intake Calculation
The second step in calculating BMR is based on your activity levels. This will lead you to your BMR score, and thus the amount of calories you need to consume each day.
a. No Regular Exercise
BMR arrived at in Step 1 x 20% will give you the number of calories you should consume each day
b. Light Exercise Each Day
BMR arrived at in Step 1 x 30% will give you the number of calories you should consume each day.
c. Intense Exercise Each Day
BMR arrived at in Step 1 x 50% will give you the number of calories you should consume each day.
d. Those With Demanding Physical Jobs
BMR arrived at in Step 1 x 60% will give you the number of calories you should consume each day
There, that is how you can work out how many calories a day you should consume to maintain weight. To lose weight, you need less calories per day. Always bear in mind, though, that if you lose weight in a diet, then you need to recalculate your BMR as your weight reduces.
